Rocca del Leone (The Lion Fortress)
Completed in 1247, Rocca del Leone is one of the finest examples of medieval
military architecture in Umbria. Located on a promontory, this pentagonal
fortress with four corner towers and a triangular keep provided complete
domination over Trasimeno.
Palazzo della Corgna
The fortress is linked to the Palazzo della Corgna by a covered walkway,
conferring a typically feudal appearance on the complex. Dating from the
late 16th century, the Palazzo contains a highly important fresco cycle
known as Il Pomerancio, for the most part attributed to Niccolò Circignani.
Covering an area of more than 1200 sq. m on the main floor, the fresco
celebrates the deeds of the great military leader Ascanio della Corgna,
as well as those of Roman heroes, and scenes from Greek mythology.
Other Castles in the Area
There are several other castles in the area surrounding Ginestra.
The 'Castle of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta' at Magione was
constructed between 1160 and 1170 as a fortified hospital. The nearby
Lambardi Tower, rising on a hill behind the town, was built in the 12th
and 13th centuries by members of the Order of the Knights of Jerusalem,
and was used by the Knights for several centuries before being abandoned.
Recently restored by Magione Local Authority, it is now open to the public.
The Castello di Cibottola is a small castle situated a short distance
from Pietrafitta. It is noted for its 500 kg bell and octagonal tower.
