Città della Pieve
Il Perugino
Città della Pieve's most famous inhabitant was born in 1445 and
baptized Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, but history knows him as 'Il Perugino',
the man from Perugia. As Umbria's most renowned artist he had a long,
prolific and mercurial career, and for a brief moment was the most successful
painter in Italy. Several of the artist's works are on display in Città
della Pieve, including 'The Adoration of the Magi' (1504) in the Oratory
of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, while many more can be seen across Italy,
as well as in the UK, Germany, France and the United States.
Città della Pieve also hosts several fine works by Domenico Alfani,
Antonio Circignani, known as 'Pomarancio' and Savini.
Palio dei Terzieri
The Città della Pieve festival lasts for 10 days in August with
a different event every evening. On the penultimate Sunday in August,
the three wards of the town challenge each other to an archery contest
with revolving bull-shaped targets inspired by the 'Caccia del Toro',
a primitive bullfight which took place at the Castel della Pieve in the
15th and 16th centuries. The contest is preceded by a historical procession
of about 700 participants in Renaissance costume (inspired by the paintings
of Perugino), including acrobats, jugglers and flame-throwers.
