Tuoro sul Trasimeno
Permanent Documentation Centre of the Battle of Trasimeno
The town of Tuoro was built in the late Middle Ages on the site of one
of the most legendary battles of ancient times. In 217 BC, more than 16,000
Roman soldiers lost their lives, wiped out by the army of Hannibal.
Inaugurated in 1996, the Centre houses an exhibition about Hannibal and
the various theories on the battle. It is an ideal starting point for
visiting the historic/archaeological battle sites, including the areas
where the confrontation took place, and the ustrina, the huge
pits that Hannibal dug to burn the corpses.
Campo del Sole (Field of the Sun)
Situated at Punta Navaccia, at Lido di Tuoro, this architectural collection
of sculptures was created between 1985 and 1989.
The exhibit is in the form of a large spiral marked by 27 sculpted columns
leading to a central table surmounted by a solar symbol.
