Lake Trasimeno
While visitors have plentiful reasons and opportunities to travel around
the area and beyond, for many the beauty of Lake Trasimeno keeps them
nearby.
At 128 sq. km, Trasimeno is the fourth largest lake in Italy. Administratively
in Umbria, it is set in an intriguing borderline area between the two
regions of Umbria and Tuscany, right in the centre of Italy. It remains
undefined in language and landscape, in the flavour of its cuisine, and
in its traditions.
Over two thousand years' of history and art encircle the lake, but today
it is also a centre for a wide range of leisure and sporting activities.
Golf and angling are available in the area, as are sailing, windsurfing,
horseriding, cycling, tennis, football and archery. And for those wishing
to take it easy, there are numerous little beaches on the lake, and a
ferryboat for trips to two of the three islands.
The lake is also a major attraction for botanists and ornithologists.
Visitors can enjoy the natural sights, from the white waterlillies amongst
the canes on the lake, to that of several species of ducks and herons,
together with cormorants, kites and kingfishers.
Surrounded by gentle hills, where woodlands alternate with vineyards
and fields of maize and sunflowers, Lake Trasimeno allows us to rediscover
a distant time and touch the echoes of our collective past.
