Nature
Lake Trasimeno Regional Park
The Trasimeno Regional Park is the largest of the six Umbrian regional
parks. It extends along much of the perimeter of Lake Trasimeno, covering
an area of over 13,000 hectares.
Set among the gently rolling Umbrian hills, Lake Trasimeno is one of
Europe's most important ornithological wetland areas, due to its large
size and the relative shallowness of its waters. It also provides a perfect
habitat for many species of fish.
La Valle Nature Sanctuary
The extensive reedbeds and open water at La Valle Nature Sanctuary at
San Savino form a complete ecosystem that has remained virtually unchanged
for centuries.
Many species of birds can be seen throughout the year. These include
Purple Herons, Kingfishers, dozens of pairs of nesting Great Crested Grebes,
migrating Ospreys, and thousands of over-wintering Moorhens.
The tourist and educational facilities at the visitor centre are open
all year round, and binoculars and telescopes are provided free of charge.
Visitors can take guided tours, either on an electric boat or along a
wooden walkway with observation points, or choose to explore the Sanctuary
unaccompanied.
